NUTs to GUTs is a five-step self-coaching practice for turning Negative Useless Thoughts into Genuinely Useful Thoughts & Feelings — with a free app, the NTG Coach, that walks you through it out loud.
NUTs are Negative Useless Thoughts: the automatic, unhelpful thoughts that show up after a stressful moment — "I always mess this up," "they must be angry with me," "everything is ruined." GUTs are Genuinely Useful Thoughts & Feelings: the balanced, realistic, evidence-based thoughts you build to take their place.
The NTG Coach app reads each question aloud in the style you choose — warm, clinical, spiritual, or CBT-focused — listens while you dictate your answers, and reads your finished GUTs back to you so you hear your new thinking in a voice other than your inner critic's. It tracks your mood before and after each session so you can watch the method work.
NUTs to GUTs was created by John C Goodman, MSW, MSOD, a social worker and organizational development consultant with three decades of experience helping people and organizations change. John is the founder of the Center for Internal Change and the creator of the NUTs to GUTs method and the CALM (Career and Life Management) program.
