Privacy
What this app stores, what leaves your device, and how to turn any of it off.
The short version
- Everything you write — sessions, journal entries, GUT cards, your balance wheel — is stored only in this browser, on this device. There is no account, and nothing is uploaded by default.
- Three features can send data off the device, and all three are off until you turn them on: spoken coaching, dictation, and email or text delivery.
- Your own writing is never sent to the voice service. Only the coach's prompts are.
- There is no analytics, no advertising, and no tracking of any kind.
- You can export everything, or delete everything, at any time from Settings → Data.
What is stored on your device
| What | Why it is kept |
|---|---|
| Sessions | Your situations, NUTs, patterns, payoffs, GUTs, next steps, and mood ratings. |
| Journal entries | Whatever you write in the Journal tab, with its prompt. |
| GUT cards | Thoughts you saved to carry with you. |
| Balance | Your wheel ratings, drainers and gainers, and your control / influence / neither lists. |
| Early warning plan | Your triggers, warning signs, support people, and first move. |
| Unfinished session | A draft of a session you have started but not completed, so a reload or a crash does not lose it. It is replaced when you finish or discard the session. |
| Settings | Voice and dictation choices, text size, reduce motion, your CALM Color, check-in times, and your own check-in messages. |
| Wording changes | Any copy you have edited in Settings → Wording. |
| Device ID | A random identifier generated on this device. It is only ever sent if you turn on email or text delivery, and it is not linked to your name. |
Clearing your browser data, using private browsing, or switching devices will remove all of it. There is no copy anywhere else. Export a backup before you switch devices.
What can leave your device
1. Spoken coaching
When spoken coaching is on and you tap Read aloud, the coach's prompt is sent to a text-to-speech service (ElevenLabs) so it can be spoken back to you.
Only the coach's own prompts are sent. The app checks each line against its list of built-in prompts before sending, and anything else — including every word you have written — is displayed on screen and never transmitted. Nothing is spoken automatically; it requires a tap each time.
The audio is generated and played back, and is not stored by this app.
Turn it off: Settings → Voice → Spoken coaching.2. Dictation
When dictation is on and you tap the Dictate button on a field, your browser's own speech recognition listens and converts what you say to text.
This is your browser's feature, not ours. Most browsers send that audio to their own servers to transcribe it — Chrome and Edge to Google, Safari to Apple — under those companies' privacy policies, not this one. The resulting text lands in the field on your device. The microphone is only ever live while you are on a field and have tapped the button.
Turn it off: Settings → Voice → Dictation. You can also revoke microphone permission in your browser settings.3. Email, text, and progress reports
If you turn on check-ins or progress reports by email or text, the app sends the address or mobile number you enter, your time zone, your schedule, and your device ID to the app's own server so the messages can be delivered. You have to tick a consent box before any of this is saved.
Progress reports include your numbers only: mood before and after, which thinking patterns came up, and when. The words you wrote are not included unless you separately turn on “Include what I wrote.” That switch is off by default and clearly labelled.
Browser notifications are a fourth option and are different — they are generated on your device and sent to no one.
Turn it off: Settings → Check-ins → Delivery. Untick the channels, or turn off “Include what I wrote” to keep sending numbers only. Message and data rates may apply to texts. What never leaves your device
The app watches what you write for language suggesting you may be in serious distress, and shows crisis resources when it sees some. That check runs entirely on your device. Nothing is transmitted, no one is alerted, and no record is made of it. It is a prompt to reach a person, not a report to anyone.
There is also no analytics, no advertising, no cookies for tracking, no third-party scripts, no fingerprinting, and no sale or sharing of anything with anyone. The app never asks for your name.
Hosting
The site is served by Netlify. Like any web host, Netlify records standard server logs — your IP address, the time, and which files were requested — to deliver the site and protect it from abuse. Those logs are Netlify's, held under their privacy policy, and contain nothing you have written.
The app also registers a service worker so it keeps working offline. That is a local cache of the app's own files; it stores nothing about you.
What you can do
- Export everything. Settings → Data → Download a backup. You get a plain JSON file with your sessions, journal, cards, balance, plan, and wording.
- Delete everything. Settings → Data → Delete everything on this device. This is immediate and cannot be undone, so export first if you might want it back.
- Delete one thing. Every session, journal entry, and GUT card has its own delete control.
- Stop delivery. Untick the channels in Settings → Check-ins → Delivery and save. To have your address, number, and any stored report data removed from the server, use the contact address below.
- Start over on permissions. Settings → Voice → Restart the quiet-start setup returns voice and dictation to off and shows the opening choices again.
Because there is no account, we cannot look up, recover, or delete anything held only on your device — including if you lose it. That is the trade-off that keeps it private.
This is not medical care
NTG Coach is a self-reflection and skills tool built on the NUTs to GUTs and CALM methods by John C Goodman, MSW, MSOD. It is not therapy, not medical care, not a diagnosis, and not an emergency service. Nothing you write here is seen by a clinician, and no one is monitoring it.
Children
This app is intended for adults and is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect anything from them. If you believe a child has provided an email address or mobile number through the delivery settings, contact us and we will remove it.
Changes and contact
If this policy changes in a way that affects what leaves your device, the change will be reflected here and the date at the top will be updated. Because there is no account, we cannot notify you directly — the date is the signal to re-read.
